Official Urges Caution Due to High Fire Danger

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag alert for high brush fire danger today, and Hampton Fire Prevention Officer Scott Steele advises residents to be careful while grilling or using fire while enjoying the warm weather.

Steele said unattended cooking is the top cause of residential home fires, and said state fire code prohibits, for any homes other than a one- or two-family dwelling, the use or kindling of hibachi, gas grills, or other similar cooking and heating devices within 10 feet of any structure other, on any balcony or under an overhang.

There was a fire last weekend due to the proximity of an unattended propane grill to a beach home, and Steele urged residents to abide by state laws and to properly use permitted electric ranges, grills and similar devices.
