City officials look to regulate food trucks in Somerville

Somerville may not be leading the way in the food truck trend, but city officials are already looking for ways to keep the mobile businesses in line.

So far Somerville has three food trucks licensed as “hawkers/peddlers,” according to City Clerk John Long – Moe’s BBQ Trolley sells hotdogs and burgers outside Trum Field; Greek Festival II makes gyros and grilled items on the Tufts University campus; and Bark ’n Bite is a licensed pushcart that sells hotdogs around the city.

But some aldermen say there have been complaints about the trucks’ locations in certain neighborhoods and want to create a new ordinance that will monitor their locations.

Ward 7 Alderman Bob Trane, who put in an order to modify the food truck licensing system at the Feb. 9 Aldermen’s meeting, said he isn’t opposed to having food trucks; he’s concerned where and when they operate.
