New barbecue joint specializes in sides

For Brian “Runt” Haynes, opening Runt’s barbecue at 699 Baxter St. was a familiar experience.

Very familiar, in fact. Just three years ago he was helping open another barbecue joint, Butt Hutt, in the very same location.

This time, however, he’s going it on his own. After Butt Hutt closed to relocate in 2011, Haynes decided to give the location another shot. Tucked in alongside the Jimbo’s convenience store and BP gas station, it’s just across the road from the UGA campus and the Red & Black building.

“We’re close to campus,” said Haynes, 33, from Madison County, “and we’re looking for everybody. But we’re going to have a special for the students, and a special for UGA employees.”
