I would have taken her home, but the wife shot me the look

“Look over there,” I said. “There’s a big pool for sale. Maybe we can buy it before summer. The kids would like it.”

Maria made a beeline to the pool. There was other stuff for sale in that aisle that would intrigue her – a compost tumbler, a copper fountain, outdoor solar lights and pool chemicals. Who could pass that by?

“Where are you going to go?” Maria asked.

“Um, I’ll be comparing laundry soap,” I stammered.

That was a dead giveaway that I was up to something, but it was too late to strike that from the record. The toothpaste had been squeezed from the tube.

My heart was pounding and my palms sweating as I drew near to the object of my affection. There was a guy with a John Deere cap ogling her. He caught my glance.
