Add an outdoor kitchen

Appliances and Accessories

"You want to have the outdoor kitchen self-contained, with all the key elements of a kitchen," said Carolina McCarthy, owner of Outdoor Living NJ, Saddle Brook (outdoorlivingnj.com). "The grill, the sink, storage units and the refrigerator, all need to be there. In this way, the cook is no longer off by himself or herself. He or she is right there with the guests."

In addition to the standard appliances, a homeowner can add a bread warmer, an icemaker, a slow cooker and a sink with hot and cold running water, said John Gorman, of the store’s sales staff. "A searer on the side of the grill can be included to sear the meat at high temperatures before grilling to seal the juices in," he added.

All of the appliances need to be high quality, warned Doug Fleischer, co-owner with his father, Richard, of Modern Propane, Lodi (modernpropane.com).
