San Rafael council asks staffers to beef up smoking ordinance
Proposed changes to San Rafael's smoking ordinance will move forward after the City Council instructed staffers to flesh out stronger rules for multi-unit housing complexes and outdoor areas.
San Rafael employees had recommended that council members ban smoking in 75 percent of apartments in buildings with 16 units or more and in all outdoor dining areas, as well as at bus stops and ATM lines and at public events, except in designated areas.
Some council members at a meeting Monday said they'd support even tougher rules for multi-unit housing, suggesting that 100 percent of units in buildings with two or more apartments or condominiums be smoke free.
"I would very much like to see us go to a (plan) where it's 100 percent of units in buildings with two or more units with a common wall and that it would encompass both condos and rental units," Councilman Damon Connolly said.
"Our 2011 survey indicates that 86 percent of households own a grill or smoker, and that's up from 82 percent for 2009," said Leslie Wheeler, spokeswoman for the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association. Wheeler said while May is known as National Barbecue
Options include both built-in versions for those with outdoor kitchens, and free-standing models for the more conventional backyard, in sizes starting from a fairly standard 30″ all the way up to the vast 54″ professional grill (pictured) which
