In last week's column, I wrote about the special pleasures of throwing casual, comforting dinner parties in winter. But I certainly didn't exhaust the topic.

One of my favorite, easy ways to make an impact with a cold-weather meal is to cook indoors the kinds of ingredients you normally would expect to be served hot off an outdoor grill in summer.

More specifically, that could mean serving hearty chops or steaks. After all, being warming, robust and satisfying, they make good sense as winter main courses. And preparing them indoors can be even easier than cooking them in the back yard.

That doesn't imply you need a fancy indoor grill to prepare steaks and chops in winter. In fact, one of the best ways I know to prepare steaks
