Where there's fire, there's smoke

Confused? Let us explain: In its third year, the red-hot NYC Chili Cookoff on April 21 will be followed April 22 by the inaugural NYC BBQ Cookoff, both at Historic Richmond Town.

Yep, that’s twice the spice in one weekend offering over $10,000 in prizes.

First up, chili power buffs compete in red and green chilis and salsa categories from the time doors open at noon until winners are announced at 4 p.m.

The next day, barbecue battlers will fire up their smokers to win prizes for the best pork butt, brisket, chicken and pork ribs. Doors open at noon; winners announced at 6 p.m.

As the only sanctioned events in New York City, the cookoffs draw the best competitors on the East Coast to the living history village at 411 Clarke Ave. Winners are sent to the World Championships, hosted by the International Chili Society and the Kansas City Barbeque Society.
