Weir Street business climate quietly thriving

While Broadway and Main Street struggle with storefront vacancies and absentee landlords, Weir Street downtown is doing just fine, thank you.

Two new businesses have opened since the beginning of the year, and others on the block abutting Taunton Green are reportedly doing well.

Often overlooked when the subject of downtown economic development is discussed, the beginning portion of Weir Street is a hybrid of bar/restaurants, retail and office space, most notably two separate Taunton Municipal Lighting Plant buildings.

New faces

The latest retail addition is Stars Mini Mart at 44 Weir St. The convenience store, which opened just over a week ago, fills a vacancy left by former tenant Annette’s Unisex Studio.

Landlord Roland Hill said he’s grateful for the 15-year lease agreement he’s signed with store owner Mohamed Hallak.
