Outdoors: A Spring march to Atlanta

I went on a 510-mile fishing trip last weekend, motoring down I-85 all the way to Atlanta. Grandchildren were involved. There is a certain 10-year-old named James that I enjoy fishing with to the degree that a 1,000-mile round trip excursion is worth the effort.

Once in Atlanta, we headed east about 40 miles to the kind of place you would buy if you won back-to-back lotteries. It was a 1,500-acre Georgia plantation designed for hunting, fishing, shooting and outdoor entertainment. The spread featured a special 10-acre lake managed just for ducks. Scattered among the pines and oak timber were numerous 5-acre food plots at the foot of Taj Mahal-type tree stands. There was an excellent sporting clays range and an outdoor pavilion with commercial grills that could cook a dozen hogs at a time and feed several hundred guests easily. Finally, there was a 50-acre lake managed by professional biologists that produces bass in the “Oh wow!” category.
