Propane grill cause of house fire

A propane grill on a deck started a house fire along S.W. 10th on Monday night.

Topeka firefighters responded to 3139 S.W. 10th shortly before 7 p.m. on the report of a house fire.

Preliminary reports indicate the fire was accidental and started with a propane grill on the back deck of the home, Topeka Fire Department Investigator Michael Martin said.

There were people inside the home when the fire started. However, they left the house before firefighters arrived. No injuries were reported.

Flames could be seen shooting through the roof of the house. Firefighters sprayed water on a tree in front of the home. They were still battling the blaze at 8 p.m.

Police officers were clearing people from sidewalks around the area because of the amount of smoke coming from the house.
