California Dreamin' – 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Series II

Sporting covered headlamps, aluminum-rimmed Borrani wire wheels and a Colombo-designed V-12, the Series II Cabriolet offered here bears little mechanical difference from Ferrari’s fabled California Spyder. Strange, then, that while Californias now routinely break the 3 million dollar mark, this car’s low estimate comes in a shocking 2.4 million dollars—or a full 80%—less. We love the California’s beautiful chrome side vents and 40 extra horsepower as much as the next mimosa drinking bidder, but find the 1.2 million dollars per side vent or $60,00 per horsepower, how-to-put-this, sobering.

Outside, this 250 Series II Cabriolet bears much more than a passing resemblance to its 3 million dollar cousins. Pinin Farina coachwork sits beautifully over Ferrari’s 2600mm long wheelbase chassis with a long, low hood followed by a tightly drawn cockpit and well-proportioned tail. The full width bumpers front and rear are simple and elegant and the covered headlights, egg-crate grill and lengthy hood scoop are quintessential Ferrari 250. The Colombo-designed V12 topped with a trio of two-barrel Weber carburetors promises a melodious 240hp and, mated to this Cabriolet’s 4-speed manual with overdrive, offers both excellent acceleration and comfortable cruising. Inside the Cabriolet truly shines, with a faintly patinated tan interior that is more luxurious and comfortable than anything offered in a California Spyder.
