Eckert surpasses goal with Atchison County scoring record

When Austin Eckert was a freshman at Atchison County, he had some goals in mind.

They didn’t necessarily include becoming the school’s all-time leading scorer.

“My dad and I made a goal my freshman year just to get on the varsity team as a freshman and then sophomore year play,” said Eckert, who did make varsity as a freshman and even saw a couple spot starts. “I didn’t really have a goal to beat (the scoring record) because I never thought I’d be close.”

With 17 points in Atchison County’s 52-42 victory over Pleasant Ridge, however, Eckert surpassed his wildest expectations by becoming the Tigers’ career scoring leader. Eckert, who is averaging 21.4 points per game this season, has scored 1,330 points in his career, topping the 1,316 Kelly Gracey scored from 1993-95 while helping the Tigers to a state title (1994) and runner-up finish (1995).
